Last year was a good one for Pax. We know from Acts of the Apostles that the first followers of Christ grew both in faith and numbers. This last year, the parishioners at Pax grew in numbers, and Mass attendance increased steadily from the previous year. This is not the whole story since our parish life is flourishing more than ever. Over 140 groups gather, at least on a monthly basis, and increase the faith of the faithful. Several hundred volunteers keep these groups and the parish alive. Those who serve the poor, support the immigrants, feed the hungry, serve those who are mourning, volunteer at Mass, and welcome those who are visiting. To mention just a very few examples. Our mission is to be where there is need. At Pax the doors are open. This is a part of Pax’s identity that all are welcome to the table. This year Pax will celebrate 45 years from its establishment. On June 25, we will celebrate that we have continued the mission of the pioneers who with the help of the Holy Spirit made His will come to reality. This will obviously be celebrated in the right way.
This last year we began a few new missions in the parish. Pax Pilgrimages began as an invitation to those who would like to do a local or external pilgrimage. Our first tour to the Basilica in Minneapolis and to The Cathedral in St. Paul was sold out in a few days and many more are to come. Pax on the Plaza began as a new parish festival. Last year many people enjoyed our bike-ride, the band, the meals, and the bingo. This year we will begin with a grand opening on a Friday night and end on Sunday. Our Pax Christi Theology Academy had a great start with 75 students signed up for the first 12-month cycle of Formed By Life program which supports the people and others to become leaders in their service to God and neighbor. The new academic year will be open for registration in February and begins in September.
Every year has a new beginning and there are some new beginnings within each year. Last year we thanked Fr. Bill Murtaugh for his time as pastor of Pax as Fr. Bill went into retirement. But he’s not gone and we enjoy having him around. I’m very grateful to Fr. Bill how well he received me as I became the parochial administrator as I began at Pax on July 1 last year. Fr. Robert Wotypka OFM Cap., returned to his community and was assigned to a mission in Montana. We wish him well there. We welcomed Oona Myhre on board to our great team of staff and thanked Shannon Rouston for her service to the youth of the people of the parish. The spirit of change is the spirit of the universe which continues to invite all of us to whatever we are called.
Wish you and your family a Happy New year with thanks for the last, and may it bring you many blessings.
Fr. Hjalmar B. Gudjonsson
Last week, we asked...
What parishioners were reflecting on, 28% said Christmas miracles, 31% said Jesus' mission, and 41% said the future. Thank you to the 108 people who shared their Christmas prayers.
